Questions we hear from parents, school staff, reporters, and MLA offices. These answers are general information, not medical or legal advice.
What does this coalition actually want?
We want clearer rules on youth-attractive vaping products, on online sales pathways that bypass age checks, and on the streets and shops near where our kids go to school. We support Bill 208 as a step in that direction, and we have asked for clearer reporting pathways so parents and schools know who to call.
Is this about banning vaping for adults?
No. We are a youth prevention coalition. The policy questions we focus on are which products, in which forms, sold through which channels. We are not asking the province to ban lawful adult sales of regulated nicotine products.
Why do flavours matter?
The Canadian Paediatric Society and Health Canada have both flagged flavours, packaging, and youth-facing promotional channels as drivers of youth uptake. Bill 208 addresses several of those areas at the provincial level.
What about enforcement?
Enforcement matters and we support funding it. Inspections, penalties, and online supervision are all part of the picture. They are not enough on their own; we also want prevention measures to be published and funded.
What can parents ask schools for?
Talk to your school first; schools and school districts often have their own policies. From the province, parents can ask for clear reporting pathways for nicotine product use on school property, for school-zone proximity data on nicotine retail, and for plain-language prevention guidance that does not require parents to be policy experts.
Why are reporting pathways such a big deal?
If a parent or a school finds a problem with how nicotine products are reaching young people, they should know exactly who to call: school administration, school district, provincial channel. Today, that line of escalation is not always clear. A coalition can usefully ask the province to fix that.
Is this coalition partisan?
No. Parents in this coalition vote across the political spectrum. We work with MLAs from any caucus who are willing to take youth prevention seriously.
Does the coalition accept industry funding?
No. We are a parent and caregiver volunteer coalition and do not accept funding from tobacco or vaping product manufacturers, importers, or retailers.
